A team from the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB), led by the Hon’ble Chief Election Commissioner Dasho Deki Pema, conducted a half-day civic education session today for Dzongkhag staff, regional offices, and the business community in Pemagatshel.
The session provided valuable insights into the journey of democracy in Bhutan and reinforced the importance of citizen participation in the democratic process. Discussions highlighted the need to promote greater involvement of women in electoral leadership and encouraged youth to take an active role in voting and decision-making.
Emphasis was also placed on ethical citizenship-reminding participants of their responsibility to uphold integrity, reject corruption, and contribute to transparent governance. The session underscored how electoral corruption can hinder development and erode public trust.
With the growing influence of digital platforms, participants were urged to be responsible digital citizens by verifying information before sharing, avoiding the spread of unverified messages, and reporting misinformation to relevant authorities.
The session also highlighted key aspects of the electoral process, including the importance of voter registration, understanding electoral procedures, and making informed choices based on credible information. Participants were reminded that free and fair elections depend on the active participation and responsibility of every citizen.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where participants actively engaged and clarified their queries.
The same civic education program will also be conducted at Yalang PS, Nangkor CS, Shumar GC, and Yurung GC.
Informed choices and active participation are the foundation of a strong democracy.
