Shumar Gewog

Shumar Gewog is located in the Northern part of the Dzongkhag with a total area of approximately 92.7 sq Km sharing borders with Nanong, Chongshing, Khar, Yurung, and Zobel gewogs. It consists of 5 chiwogs namely Dagor, Goenpoong-Shali, Nangkor, Bartseri, and Khothakgpa-Yalang with 14 villages. It has a population of about 7197 consisting of 732 households. The gewog center is connected by 31 km of road from Dzongkhag Administration. Most of the villages are connected by farm roads. Shumar Gewog enjoys moderate climatic conditions in general except in the low-altitude areas which experience extremely hot summers. Tseri and dry land cultivation is prevalent, with maize being the main cereal crop. Orange and Potatoes are grown as the main cash crops. Vegetables are grown for self-consumption, while few grow for minimal commercial purposes. The gewog also produces livestock products like cheese, butter, milk, and poultry products. Gypsum mining and gypsum power factory are located at Khothakpa which employ unskilled laborers during the off-season and contribute to the Socioeconomic development of the Dzongkhag. The Dzongkhag headquarters, Dzongkhag Hospital, and regional offices are under Shumar Gewog. The Gewog Administration has 10 staff which includes a Gup, Mangmi, Geydrung, GAO, caretaker, and 5 Tshogpas along with 3 RNR extension officials. The Gewog has one RNR center, one BHU, six ORCs, one indigenous, three Ambulances, one center school, one middle secondary school, one lower secondary school, two primary schools, one community information center, and six ECCD facilities. There are also 19 communities and a total of 186 chortens.
